TIA Offers Complete TPMS Chart

ShopTPMS

The TIA TPMS Relearn Chart is divided into two sections for domestic and import vehicles, and each section list vehicles by make, model and year. Each listing includes details on the type of TPMS; details on when a system relearn is necessary; a relearn summary including a reference number corresponding to the vehicle's procedure for initiating sensor relearn mode; information on the sensor maker, the OE sensor part number, Schrader replacement sensor part number, Schrader service pack number, Dill replacement sensor part number, Dill kit and band number, Continental replacement sensor part number, and Continental kit and band number; and torque specifications for the sensor nut, torx bolt, worm gear, and lug nuts.

"There is nothing currently on the market that has this level of TPMS information," said TIA Senior Vice President of Training Kevin Rohlwing. "We created the TIA TPMS Relearn Chart to be as user-friendly as possible – all of the information is laid out in a clear, easy-to-read format, and it has a durable coating and special binding with pre-drilled holes in the corners for easy and long-lasting use in the shop."

TIA members can purchase the TIA TPMS Relearn Chart for $85. The non-member price is $185. Volume discounts for both TIA members and non-members are also available.

TIA Plans Major TPMS Town Hall During Global Tire Expo

ShopTPMS

During the upcoming Global Tire Expo/SEMA Show, TIA plans to hold a "town hall meeting" to discuss TPMS best practices.

The event is slated for 10 a.m. on the opening day of the trade show - Tuesday, Oct. 30 - at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The seminar “TPMS Best Practices: A Town Hall Meeting” will include a wide ranging list of speakers representing TPMS sensor and tool makers, suppliers and educators.

According to TIA, “This educational event will provide attendees with a wealth of information on standard operating procedures, ensuring that TPMS will create profits for their dealership. This unprecedented gathering of industry experts is designed to provide attendees with one voice on how to properly service and maintain these systems. All aspects of the TPMS industry are represented at this panel. They agree that the industry needs a unified voice, designed to offer standard recommendations, in order to make TPMS service less confusing.”

While TIA is still working on the speaker list, at least 11 experts have committed to participating.

Conti Offers Replacement TPMS Sensors for Ford, Mazda

ShopTPMS

The VDO wheel bands and VDO sensor and wheel band packages are identical to the OE dealer part in fit, form and performance, and are exclusively available for aftermarket service from Continental, the company said.

The low pressure valveless TPMS sensor offers coverage for model years 2006 and up Ford and Mazda vehicles. This sensor consolidates three OE part numbers. The company’s high pressure valveless sensor is available for Ford truck applications covering model years 2008 and up. In addition to the valveless sensors, Continental also provides VDO wheel bands, which are designed to be used on both the low and high pressure sensor applications.

Continental said it is the only aftermarket supplier able to offer these OE-identical wheel bands and sensor and wheel band packages, which up to now have only been available from the OE dealer. (by Tire Review/Akron)

Schrader Produces 200 Millionth TPMS Sensor

ShopTPMS

Schrader reports it has reached the milestone of producing its 200 millionth TPMS sensor, which was manufactured at its Antrim plant in Northern Ireland.

“We take pride in this significant accomplishment, but know there is much more ahead of us as we continue to serve our global OEM and aftermarket customers with the advanced technology, service and support that they’ve come to expect from Schrader,” said Hugh Charvat, president and CEO of Schrader. “We directly thank our global customers for their partnership with us, and see this milestone as a launching point as TPMS continues to be adopted in global markets for its safety, fuel-efficiency and environmental benefits to drivers worldwide.”

Approximately 306 million TPMS sensors are installed in vehicles in North America alone, and more than half of these were produced by Schrader. Schrader delivered its 100 millionth sensor in July 2009 and the company is now looking forward to the production of its 300 millionth sensor. It won’t have to wait very long, as TPMS is now mandatory in Europe, South Korea and several other Asia-Pacific countries.

“Today’s achievement isn’t just significant from a quantitative standpoint; it’s significant because of what producing our 200 millionth TPMS sensor means. It means that the high quality of our product, and innovative standards we’ve come to be known by, have ensured that our customers trust Schrader as a critical safety supplier across their diverse vehicle platforms,” commented Schrader managing director Stephen McClelland.

Schrader has been active in the design and manufacture of valve, mechanical and electronic system components for over 165 years. Earlier this year, the company was acquired by private equity firm Madison Dearborn Partners. (Tyres & Accessories)

Europe Ready to Go all TPMS

ShopTPMS

It’s a great move. If you thought Europeans were such car nuts that they spit polish their valve stems every day, you’d be wrong. Reports I see indicate that the Europeans are at least as bad as Americans when it comes to tire care….maybe a bit worse.

Doesn’t matter. They will soon be 100% TPMS laden and have all of the tool and reset and relearn headaches we enjoyed.

As expected the decision brought the same stuff we read here about how TPMS will cut CO2 emissions and increase tire life and reduced fuel use (some 3.4 billion euros per year worth). And those things are all important, but not the main reason why TPMS is moving toward universal status. The main reason? Reducing blowout accidents and accompanying injuries, deaths and lawsuits.

Interestingly, the EC has yet to establish a warning threshold. Here, NHTSA decided (against all sane advice) to make TPMS warning lamps go off at 25% underinflation vs. carmaker-established levels. Continental is vocally pressing for a 10% threshold, and frankly I think they are right.

By and large, European consumer vehicles are smaller, and use smaller sized tires. Which means inflation pressures are a bit more sensitive. A 25% threshold on 14- or 15-inch tires – especially 175 or 195 section widths – is just not a good idea.
